The Lake District has long been nothing short of heaven for lovers of the 'great outdoors' and its stunning lakes and sumptuous hills are ideal for hiking, off-road mountain biking and even cycling.

Hiking is perhaps the number one attraction of the Lake District region and each year, literally thousands of tourists arrive to ply the main hiking trails around Ambleside and Keswick, where innumerable trails criss-cross the neighbouring hillsides. Other excellent hiking trails can be found around Brant Fell, Catbells, Hayeswater, Kendal, Keswick, Orrest Head, the Patterdale Valley, Penrith and Lake Windermere.

Those who are feeling especially fit may even like to consider joining the 'Coast to Coast Walk', which spans the district's mountains. The tourist information centres of the Lake District always provide leaflets and information about the main hiking and walking trails available.

Hikers should always bear in mind that weather conditions can be quite changeable, and some trails are rather steep. Beginners are advised to join one of the free guided walks between June and August.
